In some offices, computers are shared between 2 or more employees or temporary workers. That sounds like a recipe for disaster, but Windows 10 has great tools for allowing multiple people to share a single PC without letting them read, edit, or delete each other'southward files and folders; use or delete each other's applications; or make system-wide customizations.

These tools can too exist a big help for people who work from home and need to share their PC with a family unit member some of the time. They let you to set and log in with unlike user profiles then each user has access to merely their ain files and folders, apps, and preferences. In this slice, I'll show you what to practice.

This article has been updated for the Windows 10 October 2020 Update (version 20H2). If you have an earlier release of Windows 10, some things may be slightly different.

Setting upward accounts for sharing a Windows x PC

Windows 10 makes it easy for multiple people to share the aforementioned PC. To practise it, you lot create split up accounts for each person who volition apply the computer. Each person gets their own storage, applications, desktops, settings, and and so on.

One person, the PC's administrator, sets upwardly and manages all the accounts, including a variety of system settings that just the ambassador can admission. The administrator account is established when Windows is first installed or used on the machine. (You tin can also upgrade other user accounts to administrator status, every bit I'll cover later in the story.)

If you're an administrator, setting upwards a user account is easy. Get-go you'll need the email address of the person for whom you want to set up an business relationship. Ideally, this should be the sign-in information for their Microsoft account (such every bit an @outlook.com or @hotmail.com accost or a corporate electronic mail accost at an organisation that uses Outlook) so they'll be able to use all of their existing Windows settings, get admission to their OneDrive storage, and download and install apps from the Microsoft Store. Anybody tin sign upward for a Microsoft account for free.

For at present, we'll presume that the person you want to add has a Microsoft account. Later on I'll prove yous how to ready an account if they don't have 1 and don't want to annals for one, only note that you can't fix up restrictions for family unit members unless they sign in with a Microsoft account. Accounts for children tin only apply an @outlook.com or @hotmail.com domain.

To add a user, click the Start button, select Settings and then choose Accounts. On the Accounts screen, cull Family & other users from the menu on the left. To set up up an business relationship for a co-worker, go to the "Other users" section and click Add someone else to this PC. To gear up up accounts for family unit members that permit you set age limits, game and app restrictions, etc., instead cull Add a family fellow member under the "Your family" section.

After yous create an account for someone else, the name appears on the Accounts page. (Click any prototype in this story to enlarge it.)

On the screen that appears, enter the email address of the person for whom y'all want to create a user business relationship, click OK and then Terminate. The user's proper name at present appears on the "Family & other users" accounts folio.

Information technology too appears when you click the icon representing the electric current user of the PC, midway down on the left side of the Start menu when you lot click the Kickoff button.

When an account name is clicked in the Get-go menu, it will show all of the accounts on the machine.

If you're the owner of the new account, there are two ways to beginning using information technology. You can click the icon representing the account of the current user of the PC, midway downward on the left side of the Commencement menu. That displays all the accounts on the PC. Click your account name and log into your account with your Microsoft account password. Or you can restart the PC: The Windows login screen will now have ii accounts on it — yours and the ambassador's. You tin can click your account name and log in with your Microsoft business relationship password.

The account will have its ain separate OneDrive storage. Each user's local files and folders won't exist accessible to the other. You will see the Windows apps you've installed, but non anyone else's, and vice versa. Given that it's a Microsoft account, files and settings will sync with all other devices connected to your business relationship.

Creating a new user account without using a Microsoft account

Creating a shared PC if the other person doesn't have or desire a Microsoft business relationship takes a little bit more work.

To do it, get to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Add someone else to this PC. (This is aforementioned selection y'all'll make if y'all're adding a family member without a Microsoft account, merely think that you won't be able to apply parental controls.)

On the screen that appears, click I don't have this person'south sign-in information. And so at the lesser of the next screen, click Add together a user without a Microsoft account.

Y'all can add a user who doesn't have a Microsoft account as a local business relationship.

Now you tin add a user proper noun and a password. The person's business relationship name volition now testify up the same fashion as if y'all had created one using a Microsoft business relationship.

When you create an account for someone in this manner, it's called a local business relationship. Unlike a Microsoft account, it won't sync settings between devices, and it doesn't give access to OneDrive. In improver, when someone has a local account, they won't be able to download or install any apps from the Microsoft Store. They won't be able to install desktop applications on their own, either — when they try to install them, they're prompted for the password of the administrator's business relationship. And so an ambassador will have to be nearby to type in the password in order for them to install desktop applications.

Switching between accounts

Once your account has been fix, it's easy to switch from the account currently running on the auto to your ain. If someone else is currently using Windows 10 on the machine, and you desire to use information technology, you tin click the Starting time button, click the icon representing the current user's account midway down on the left side of the Start menu, then click the account to which you want to switch and type in the password.

You can, of class, too log in from the lock screen, which displays all of the user accounts on the motorcar.

One affair to proceed in heed when several people use a PC with dissever accounts: Even when someone is not using the PC, they even so remain signed into the business relationship unless they sign out or the PC is restarted. So several people might be signed into accounts, even though just one person is actively using the PC. (This does non hateful that users have any access to the others' accounts. At that place can be just i active business relationship at a time; an individual user volition nevertheless need to re-enter the countersign to encounter their account.)

To see which users are currently signed in, click the Commencement push button, then click the icon representing the current user's account midway down on the left side of the Kickoff menu to encounter all of the machine's accounts. Look underneath each account. The words "Signed in" will appear under the appropriate accounts.

What does it hateful that someone is signed into their account, even if they're not currently using information technology? When someone is signed in, Windows 10 saves the land of that person'south user business relationship — which applications the person was running, the files they were working on, and so on. That style, when they switches back to using their account, everything will exist in identify, and they won't take to waste time launching apps, opening files, and and so on.

This is useful, but information technology can exist problematic as well, because information technology can lead to lost work. When a PC is restarted or shut down, all users on it are automatically logged off. Say someone is logged into their account and hasn't nevertheless saved work — if the computer is switched to another account, and the person using that second account restarts or shuts down the system, the first person will lose their unsaved work.

The upshot? It'southward ever a skillful idea to log out of your business relationship before letting someone else employ the same computer. It just takes a moment: Click your business relationship name at the top of the Start menu and then click Sign out.

Managing accounts

If you want to let another user have administrator access, information technology's unproblematic to practice. Select Settings > Accounts > Family & other users, click the account to which yous want to give administrator rights, click Change account type, then click Business relationship blazon. Cull Ambassador and click OK. That'll do information technology. You lot tin can always change information technology back to a standard user account subsequently using this same method.

You can alter a standard user account to an Ambassador account.

It's also easy to remove accounts — as long equally you're the administrator. Select Settings > Accounts > Family & other users, click the account you lot want to remove and then click Remove. A screen appears alert you that when you delete the business relationship, you also delete all data associated with it, which include files, desktop setup, apps, music and then on. Also, note that you lot can merely delete an account if the person has signed out of Windows ten.

When you lot delete an business relationship, you also delete all data associated with it.

Once you've got information technology in hand, you'll find that this is a simple and useful style for sharing a Windows x PC amidst multiple people.

I've got one more tip for you: how to turn on something that is sort of a super-administrator account hidden in Windows 10.

Every bit I explained previously, the business relationship you create when you install Windows is the PC's ambassador account — it gives you control over how Windows x works on the PC, what other accounts can exist created then on. But Windows x also sets upwardly a hidden administrator account during installation.

This subconscious business relationship has one advantage over a normal administrator account — when you use information technology, you won't become any User Account Control (UAC) prompts. That makes information technology much easier to troubleshoot and customize Windows, because you won't exist constantly bothered past those pesky UAC notices.

Some people refer to this hidden administrator account every bit an elevated account, and a normal i as an un-elevated account.

It's easy to turn on and use the hidden administrator account:

  1. Make sure that you're using your normal Administrator account.
  2. Click the Start button, scroll downwards through your apps and click Windows System.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt from the drib-down carte du jour that appears, then click More and select Run as administrator. The command prompt launches. Look in the prompt's title bar — it will read "Administrator: Command Prompt."
  4. At the command prompt, type net user administrator /active:yeah and printing the Enter

That turns on the hidden administrator business relationship. It will appear on the Windows 10 login screen and on the Start menu screen — but click it to use it equally you would any other business relationship.
